Sunday Afternoon Salon 20 years

At Sunday, the 5th of October from 15.00 till 19.30 h. the Nijmegian Sunday Afternoon Salon for senior homosexual men will celebrate its 20th anniversary in Villa Lila, In de Betouwstraat 9 at Nijmegen.
In a festive program congratulations will be given by the chairman of COC Nijmegen, Peter van Loon and city-councillor Lenie Scholten.
After that, the new chairman of the national COC, Wouter Neerings will speak with Cees van der Pluijm about the future for senior homosexual men the next 20 years.
The afternoon will be closed at 18.00 h. with a buffet.

Unique
The Nijmegian Sunday Afternoon Salon is an initiative of Jan Houterman and Wim van den Broek. Every first and third Sunday of the month, holidays and vacations included, the doors opened for elderly gentlemen from all of the Netherlands. Even from Belgium people come to this salon. Concerning age, ambiance and continuity this Salon is unique for the Netherlands.

The organisers guarantee a personal  reception and take care of simple bites with drinks and fitting music. The fact that older gay men can talk about past, present and future in a safe environment still proves to be important for their emancipation.

History
In 1988 Jan Houterman and Wim van den Broek take the initiative to initiate a Sunday Afternoon salon for ‘senior homosexual gentlemen’. Their idea appears to be a golden choice. The first and third Sunday afternoon of the month is a very busy one for 8 years at the Groesbeekseweg 38.
The first of January 1997 the salon moves to Villa Lila, the social-cultural centre for ho/le/bi-Nijmegen. At this location the salon still is visited by lots of guests from all over the country and abroad: from Assen to Antwerp. “Unique because of atmosphere, style and sociability” appears to be a motto that lasts already for 20 years.

The Nijmegian Sunday Afternoon salon is of importance within the emancipation policy for seniors such as also given shape by COC Nijmegen.
Last 30 may the ‘Roze Loper’ (Pink Carpet strip) was presented to three care institutions (six nursing homes) in Nijmegen. The presentation of the ‘Roze Loper’ is for the time being the closing piece of a project of awareness for management, personnel and inhabitants of nursing homes about the presence of homo/bisexual elderly people within these nursing homes.
