Holland hosts international dance event
Nijmegen September 20
On Saturday night the 13th of October the official world championship
ballroom dancing for female and male couples will take place in Nijmegen.
In the splendid concert hall of the Vereeniging in Nijmegen dancers from
more than twelve countries will contend for a gold medal in six categories.
After the United States and Hungary, this year Holland will be the hosting
country of this international dance event. New Dance Generation will be
responsible for the organization.
What once started as a specific gay sport is now developing into the
fastest growing discipline of the dancing world. In Nijmegen gays dance
with heteros and Muslims with Christians. Female and male couples on the
dance floor soon will be just as much accepted as female and male doubles
on the tennis court. “In Wimbledon there is no rainbow flag hanging
in the stadium either during a female double or male double match. What
matters is the dancing, the music and the sport,” organizer Berry
Bleij of New Dance Generation remarks.
Ballroom dancing in the theatre
To see a dance performance normally one would go to the theatre,
but ballroom dancing until recently remained hidden behind closed doors
of dusty dance schools or chilly sports halls. With the dance event NIJMEGEN2007
New Dance Generation will bring glamorous ballroom dancing into the spotlights
of the theatre. The full evening’s entertainment program is filled
with surprising dance shows and performances, one of these being the exhilarating
show put on by musical star Martin van de Bentem and his partner. One
of the presenters at the contests will be Julie Fryer. She has become
well-known because of her participation in Dancing With The Stars, and
during her dancing career she obtained three world titles with her partner
Louis van Amstel.
Koen Brouwers, fivefold Dutch Champion Latin American and professional
dancer of Dancing With The Stars has agreed to sit on the international
jury panel.
Dutch couples
There may be an orange tinged party in Nijmegen this year. As
it happens, the Dutch couples scored very well during the World Championship
in Budapest. For instance, Bas Gill and Martijn Diependaal became the
world champions Latin Show dance and won the silver medal in the category
Latin for male pairs. Apart from this successful couple our country knows
true ‘rising stars’. Miriam and Christel Andeweg climbed up
out of nowhere to the highest international class. At the Eurogames Dutchmen
Jaakko Toivonen and Damir Ganeev gained second place right behind the
Danish world champions. It promises to be an exciting contest in which
the couples could do with the support of a large orange legion.
Especially for this world championship there is a VIP arrangement with
the best seats at the dance floor. There you can enjoy a unique night
out over champagne and snacks.
This arrangement and regular tickets are available through www.ticketservice.nl.
