The invisible body
Every research into the current position of lesbian women invariably
leads to the conclusion that the invisibility of lesbianism constitutes
an obstacle to the emancipation of the lesbian woman. The Villa organizes
exhibitions in which we aim for equal participation of men and women.
With success. The last few years with a program in which the ‘portrayal
of the Homosexual’ plays a prominent part. Here a strange phenomenon
occurs. Gay men are portraying like crazy: from water coloring to silk-screen
printing-all techniques are used. And of course here the focus is on the
male body, interacting or not interacting with another male body. The
portrayal of the Lesbian--trailblazers aside--seems to only have gained
steam in the last years. And, just as with the men it is again photography
that seems to take the lead. This development too has been observable
in the Villa. Only lately during the big international photography exhibition
Lesbian Connexions. Will a renaissance in lesbian portrayal be next in
other branches of art? With ‘The Invisible Body’ we will show
work by a number of artists who at any rate don’t make a problem
about their lesbian origins. Participating in this exhibition: Chawwa
Winberg, Margaretha Louwers (not gay by the way), Doreen Bour, Ina kooper,
An Stalpers and Margret Brügman. Ladies’ Salon Elisabeth Bas
from the COC Nijmegen took part in the organization.
