Mieke Koenen
Mieke Koenen paints mostly female figures, mainly nudes. Her work used to
be many-colored and exuberant. In a mini essay I once compared it to Gauguin’s
work. Later it turned more monochrome, and with almost graphic means-line
and plane-the female form was explored. Nowadays-both methods are still
being further developed-one cannot deny a certain irony in her work. Is
it right that in her compositions the models-the paintings, the painter-seem
to ask you something…but what? It seems so clear but only at closer
glance one perceives the riddles. Helmut Jöcken
Helmut Jöcken is from Germany and started out as a technical designer.
He can’t be blamed for that/He can’t help it. Later he went
to the Art Academy in Maastricht, and when he finally dared make the male
nude his main subject the coins dropped for teachers and fellow students.
That doesn’t mean he embraced ‘homosexual’ art. His
work is in all techniques rather sober, still leaning towards the abstract-where
he hails from. Very contemplative work. Which shows in its form all the
questions Helmut is dealing with in his art.
Ad Dams
Ad Dams is a child of the gay movement. He participated in the realization
of the first editions of the Flikkeragenda, which has now returned as
the new MM/VV agenda in Nijmegen. He has also worked for the Gay newspaper
as an artist. Additionally he paints portraits, landscapes, still-lives
and much more. In this exhibition he is represented by pencil drawings.
Very fine depictions characterized by an extremely measured drawing technique
in subtle colors. This contrasts sharply with the often surprisingly morbid,
surrealistic ‘intense’ content. |
